Dog Breeds – Basset Hound

basset hound

Best known as the cartoon character Fred Basset, this scent hound (sometimes known as a Hush Puppy) has also been associated with comfortable shoes round the world. Its distinctive appearance and deep foghorn voice make it stand out in a crowd.

A descendant of the French Bassets (“bas” meaning low), the basset hound is a distant relative of the bloodhound and was bred to chase hares. It may be slow, but it can steadily cover considerable distances.

The Basset Hound has a barrellike body atop short, sturdy legs. It seems to have more skin than strictly necessary, which wrinkles over its body. Its ears are long, possibly to aid in picking up scent, while its gentle eyes are slightly sunken in its distinctive dome-shaped head. Its coat is short and smooth, and comes in combinations of black, tan, white, and lemon.

A gentle, kindly dog that is good with children. Its one negative characteristic is its occasional stubbornness. It has a hearty appetite that must be watched if it is not to put on weight.

Suitability as a pet

A dog with a great character that can adapt well to life in the city. Its appealing, friendly temperament should make it a good family member. Its enormous bark makes a great burglar deterrent.

A blogger with a great enthusiasm for dogs, I am delighted to know and write a story about dog's health, care and tips. Besides that, I also love camping, listening to psychedelic rock (Arctic Monkeys rule!) and Reddit.
